Volunteer

 


Each year our pro bono attorneys, law students and legal professionals provide over 4,000 hours of direct legal services to our HIV+ clients on a wide range of issues, coordinated through the Barristers AIDS Legal Services Project, a collaborative program with the LA County Bar Association. In return, volunteers receive challenging and rewarding legal experiences, the chance to mentor under HALSA staff attorneys, CLE and other trainings and the unending gratitude of their clients.

Consumer, Disability Discrimination, Employment, Immigration, Housing, Wills, Health Directives, Powers of Attorney, Real Property, Health Law, Guardianships, Social Security Appeals, Insurance.

 

  • Attorneys:

HALSA needs pro bono attorneys to accept referrals and provide one-on-one representation in all areas of law listed above. Representation can include counsel and advice, brief service, or litigation, depending on the attorney’s expertise and interest. Our most active pro bono panels are in the areas of immigration, consumer law and simple estate planning. Attorney schedules are always accommodated. Deferred Associates or law school and law firm fellowships are also welcomed.

 

  • Law Students:

Internship opportunities are available year-round to work under HALSA staff attorneys, including a full-time internship program in the summer. Students interview clients, provide legal education and do extensive legal research and writing. Spanish speaking and previous experience working with diverse communities is highly desirable.   • Paralegals, Legal Secretaries & Notaries:

HALSA staff attorneys frequently need the help of trained legal professionals, especially in the areas of legal research and litigation support. Generally, the work can be done from your own home or office.
