TAX ADVOCACY
Like most facing a life-threatening illness, people with HIV/AIDS often neglect to file tax returns for a number of years which can accrue substantial penalties and interest. HALSA files past year returns, negotiates with the IRS and FTB when individuals are disabled and unable to pay their tax debt, or when clients wish to transition back to work and need to resolve their tax debt or wage garnishment issues. We can also assist individuals in filing current tax returns and give advice on tax credits and other issues of importance to low-income families.

We can assist HIV+ individuals who:

• Did not file past tax returns

• Don’t know if they should file a return this year

• Are facing an IRS audit

• Received an IRS levy notice

• Need an ITIN number

• Have past due IRS or FTB debt

• Received a wage garnishment notice
